Torre Canne di Fasano
Torre Canne di Fasano is a fraction of the municipality of Fasano, about 8 km from Fasano, in the summer-autumn period it hosts almost 10,000 inhabitants, in the winter-spring period it hosts almost 400 inhabitants
Marine resort with white and fine sandy beaches which is part of the regional coastal dunes from Torre Canne to Torre San Leonardo established in 2006.
The climate of Torre Canne presents a typically maritime climate thanks to the mitigating action of the Adriatic, with less marked seasonal temperature excursions.
The symbol of the hamlet is the lighthouse built in 1929 which illuminates the coast, the cliffs and the whole sea in front.
Torre Canne derives from an ancient watchtower placed to protect the coasts from the Saracen raids.
Located near the lighthouse, built in the 16th century and demolished after the last world war, the tower was called the reeds because it was located near a large reed bed, still partially existing today, and was fed by the numerous streams that flowed from the hills into the area. of Torre Canne (today two of them remain visible, the Great River and the Little River). Just these spring waters were considered curative enough to be called “Waters of Christ” for their therapeutic action.
Torre Canne is known for the thermal baths The use of the waters of Torre Canne dates back to the mid-19th century, with more intensive use starting from the post-war period.
Since the 1980s, the hamlet has expanded, a church has been built and has therefore also grown as a seaside resort.
Since 2011 Torre Canne has received the blue flag which is a recognition given by the FEE (Foundation for Environmental Education) to European coastal resorts that meet quality criteria relating to bathing water parameters and the service offered, taking into account for example the cleaning of the beaches and tourist docks.
The Regina tomato is the name of a local variety of tomato from Serbian, grown between Fasano and Ostuni, in the coastal brackish soils of the Parco delle Dune Costiere, from Torre Canne to Torre San Leonardo up to Egnazia, along the ancient Via Traiana, is harvested starting from the month of July: a part is sold fresh and a part is placed in crates where it undergoes a drying up to the beginning of September, when the cotton is ready for spinning.
At this point the cherry tomatoes, tied for the peduncle with the cotton thread to form the ramasole, are hung on the vaults of the farms or houses and are kept until the end of April of the following year.
At one time, the possession of many crayfish was an expression of social prestige and family wealth: the girls of marriageable age who owned many were coveted.
The name of this tomato is inspired by the characteristics of the peduncle, which grows into the shape of a crown.
Berries are small and rounded. The peel, rather thick – a characteristic due precisely to the brackish water with which the gardens near the sea are irrigated – increases the conservation of this variety and the resistance to parasites.
